Research-based: how we put this guide together. We haven’t tested these products hands-on. Product details come from the manufacturers’ own pages as of October 8, 2026, linked inline and listed in Sources. We don’t rate how anything “feels,” and we’ve left prices out because they change often.

Bringing a toy into a relationship can be exciting. It can also feel awkward to bring up, especially the first time. The good news is that couples’ toys aren’t about replacing anyone. They’re tools for exploring together, communicating, and trying something new.

This guide covers the main types of couples’ toys, gives research-based examples from LELO, We-Vibe, and Lovense, and finishes with the practical side: talking about it, consent, lube, and cleaning.

Short answer: Couples’ toys come in three main types: toys worn during partnered sex, toys one partner wears while the other controls them by remote or app (including over long distances), and toys you can use on each other, like massagers and wands. For a first toy, start with something simple, made of body-safe silicone, that you’ve chosen together.

Start with a conversation

Before you shop, it helps to talk. Some gentle ways in:

  • Frame it as curiosity, not a fix. “I saw something I thought might be fun to try together” lands differently than “something’s missing.”
  • Browse together. Looking at product pages side by side lets you both react without pressure.
  • Agree on boundaries. Talk about what’s in and out of bounds, including whether a toy is “ours” or one person’s.
  • Make it easy to say no or stop. Either partner should be able to pause at any point without needing to explain.

Type 1: Toys designed to be worn during partnered sex

These are what many people picture when they hear “couples’ vibrator.” They typically have a slim internal arm and an external arm, so vibration reaches both partners during penetrative sex. Because they’re worn, they keep hands free.

We-Vibe Sync O

We-Vibe describes Sync O as a C-shaped vibrator with a flexible, O-shaped internal loop that holds it in place. The external arm rests outside the body. It can be used hands-free solo or with a partner during sex. We-Vibe’s listed specs (We-Vibe):

  • Body-safe silicone, free from phthalates and BPA, made without latex
  • IPX7 waterproof
  • 150 minutes run time; 90 minutes charge time
  • Control by the button on the toy, the included remote, or the We-Vibe app, “across a room or a continent”
  • 2-year warranty

We-Vibe’s instructions say to apply a little lube to the internal arm before insertion and to start with the button on the base (We-Vibe).

Sync O is one of several current Sync models. We-Vibe also lists Sync 2, Sync Go, and Sync Lite. Sync 2, for example, is listed as IPX7, with up to 120 minutes of run time, up to 90 minutes of charging, and a 2-year warranty (We-Vibe Sync 2).

We-Vibe Chorus

Chorus is another adjustable couples’ vibrator. Its distinguishing feature is the “Squeeze” remote, where pressure controls intensity. We-Vibe lists (We-Vibe):

  • ABS and body-safe silicone, made without phthalates, BPA, or latex
  • IPX7 toy, but the remote is “only splashproof, not fully waterproof”
  • 90 minutes run time; 120 minutes charge time
  • 2-year warranty

We-Vibe also sells a newer Chorus Pro, which it lists with dual clitoral motors, a Squeeze remote with haptic feedback, app control over distance, up to 120 minutes of run time, up to 90 minutes of charging, and a 2-year warranty (We-Vibe Chorus Pro).

LELO TIANI 3 and TIANI DUO

LELO’s TIANI range works on a similar idea, with one arm worn internally and one externally:

  • TIANI 3 comes with a wireless remote with SenseMotion, which LELO says increases intensity “with the flick of a wrist.” LELO lists a maximum noise level of 50 dB, up to 2 hours of use, and a wireless range of up to 12 m (39 ft). It’s made of body-safe silicone (per manufacturer) and ABS plastic (LELO).
  • TIANI DUO has two motors, which LELO says transmit vibration to both partners. It has 8 settings, a motion-sensitive remote, a 50 dB maximum noise level, and up to 2 hours of use (LELO).
  • TIANI Harmony is the app-controlled version. It has two motors and 10 settings, connects to the LELO app over Bluetooth, and gives up to 2 hours of use (LELO).

LELO’s usage notes suggest getting comfortable with the toy first before inviting your partner to join, and say TIANI toys can be used in any position (LELO TIANI 3).

Fit matters. Bodies vary, and worn couples’ toys don’t fit every pair perfectly. Adjustable designs like Sync O and Chorus are marketed for exactly this reason (We-Vibe Sync O; We-Vibe Chorus). Check each manufacturer’s return policy before buying. We-Vibe, for example, only accepts returns of unopened items with intact hygienic seals (We-Vibe FAQ).

Type 2: Remote- and app-controlled toys

With these toys, one partner wears the toy and the other controls it. Many are also designed for long-distance relationships.

  • Lovense Lush 4 is an app-controlled wearable egg. It’s IPX7 waterproof, has a published minimum noise level of 36 dB, and offers up to 350 minutes of use (Lovense). Lovense’s app supports local and long-distance control (Lovense).
  • We-Vibe Jive 2 is a wearable egg that can be controlled with its remote or the We-Vibe app, “at home, in public, or over long-distance.” It’s IPX7, made of body-safe silicone, and carries a 2-year warranty (We-Vibe).
  • We-Vibe Moxie+ is a wearable vibrator held in place in underwear by a magnetic clip, controlled by app or remote, with up to 2 hours of run time (We-Vibe).

For long-distance couples

If you live apart or travel often, app-controlled toys let one partner control the other’s toy over the internet. Both big app brands support it. We-Vibe’s app has a Long Distance Play section with in-app chat and video (We-Vibe app), and We-Vibe says Sync O can be controlled “across a room or a continent” (We-Vibe). Lovense says its app supports local and long-distance control (Lovense).

The controlling partner doesn’t need a toy with either brand. For We-Vibe, they need the We-Vibe app, and We-Vibe says you don’t need to create an account to install it (We-Vibe app FAQ). For Lovense, both partners need their own Lovense Remote account. Alternatively, Lovense’s Control Link lets someone control your toy “without downloading any software” (Lovense Remote FAQ; Lovense Control Link guide).

If you both want a toy, Lovense also supports toy-to-toy sync, where two toys react to each other across distance (for example, Nora with Max 2) (Lovense). For a side-by-side look at the two brands’ apps, specs, and warranties, see Lovense vs We-Vibe: which app-controlled toy brand fits you?.

A consent note for remote toys: Agree in advance when and where remote control is okay, and agree on a clear way to say “stop.” The person wearing the toy should always be able to turn it off themselves.

Type 3: Toys you can use on each other

Not every couples’ toy needs to be worn. A massager or wand can be used on either partner, for foreplay, or just for relaxation.

  • LELO SMART WAND 2 (Large) is described by LELO as a wand “for yourself or your partner” that can also be used to “soothe sore muscles.” It has 10 patterns and up to 4 hours of use (LELO).
  • Lovense Domi 2 is a compact, app-controlled mini wand that Lovense says is “designed for both solo and partner play.” It’s IPX6 water-resistant and runs up to 6 hours (Lovense).

These are often the easiest “first couples’ toy” because there’s nothing to fit.

Body-safety basics for couples

  • Choose non-porous materials like body-safe silicone and ABS, which are easier to clean thoroughly (LELO). For more, see Body-safe sex toy materials: a plain-English guide.
  • Use condoms on shared toys. The NHS advises not sharing sex toys, and if you do, to “wash and cover them with a new condom before anyone else uses them” (NHS). The CDC says most condoms are “highly effective in preventing HIV and certain other STIs during sex and when sharing sex toys” (CDC).
  • Change condoms between partners and between body areas. LELO recommends using condoms between partners and play changes (LELO).
  • Use water-based lube with silicone toys. LELO warns silicone-based products can damage silicone (LELO FAQ), and We-Vibe recommends water-based lubricants (We-Vibe FAQ).
  • Clean before and after every use with soap and water or a toy cleaner, following the manufacturer’s instructions (We-Vibe FAQ).
  • Stop if anything hurts. If you have pain or irritation that doesn’t settle, or questions about STIs, talk to a healthcare provider or sexual health clinic. This guide isn’t medical advice.

How to choose: a quick decision guide

  • Want to share sensations during sex? Look at worn couples’ vibrators (Sync O, Chorus, TIANI range).
  • Want one partner to control the toy, or live apart? Look at app- or remote-controlled wearables (Lush 4, Jive 2, Moxie+).
  • Want the lowest-pressure start? Choose a massager or wand you can take turns with (SMART WAND 2, Domi 2).
  • Care about privacy? Compare published noise figures. TIANI 3 and TIANI DUO list a 50 dB maximum (LELO TIANI 3; LELO TIANI DUO). See Quiet vibrators: how to read noise specs, plus low-decibel options.

FAQ

What’s the best couples’ toy for beginners?

There isn’t one best option. For many couples, a massager or a simple worn vibrator is the easiest start. Choose based on what you both want to try, and check fit, materials, and the return policy.

What’s a good couples’ vibrator for beginners?

It depends on the type you both want. If you want shared sensation during sex, look at worn couples’ vibrators with adjustable fit, like We-Vibe Sync O or Chorus (We-Vibe Sync O; We-Vibe Chorus). If one partner wants to control the other’s toy, or you live apart, look at app- or remote-controlled wearables. If you’d rather avoid fit questions entirely, a massager or mini wand is the simplest start. Whatever you choose, check the material, waterproof rating, and return policy. For a solo first toy, see How to choose your first vibrator: a beginner's buyer's guide.

Will a couples’ toy work with our bodies?

It depends. Worn toys rely on fit, which is why several are adjustable (We-Vibe Sync O). If you’re unsure, a non-worn toy like a massager avoids the fit question entirely.

Is it okay if only one of us uses the toy?

Absolutely. Many “couples’ toys” are used by one partner at a time, and many solo toys work well with a partner. LELO, for example, notes TIANI 3 can be used solo or with a partner (LELO).

Do we need an app?

No. Toys like TIANI 3 and Chorus come with physical remotes (LELO; We-Vibe). Apps add extras like long-distance control.

How do we bring it up without making it awkward?

Pick a relaxed, non-sexual moment, frame it as something fun to explore together, and browse options side by side. Keep it optional. A “not right now” is a fine answer.
