Research-based: how we put this guide together. We haven’t used these products. This guide is based on manufacturer pages checked on October 10, 2026, linked inline and again in Sources. It is not a hands-on review. If a page does not state a spec, we leave it out. Prices change, so check the product page before you buy.
A first dildo is a size you can use, a material you can clean, a firmness you can accept, and a base that matches how you want to hold it. Vibration can wait. Fun Factory’s dildo guide puts the category simply: a dildo has no motor, and you control the movement (Fun Factory).
Short answer: Start with a small toy in a named non-porous material, usually body-safe silicone, and read the diameter before the length. A suction base matters only if you want the toy fixed to a smooth surface. A flared or wide base matters if anal use is possible. The examples below illustrate those choices. They are not a ranking.
Quick picks at a glance
Published-spec illustrations, not products we have tried, and not a complete shelf.
| Example | What it illustrates | Key published specs |
|---|---|---|
| Tantus Silk Small | The small end of a line Tantus calls a first dildo | Diameter 0.8"; length 4.25"; 100% Ultra-Premium Silicone; boilable and dishwasher safe, per Tantus (Tantus) |
| Tantus Silk Medium | The next size up, with a harness note | Diameter 1.1"; length 5.25"; harness compatible; same silicone claims (Tantus) |
| Fun Factory AMOR | A small silicone dildo with a suction base | 14.6 cm; Ø 2.3–3.7 cm; 181 g; 100% medical-grade silicone; suction base (Fun Factory) |
| njoy Pure Wand | A rigid stainless toy, not a classic dildo | 8 in (200 mm); tips 1.5 in (38 mm) and 1 in (25 mm); 1.51 lb (680 g); stainless steel (njoy) |
Start with diameter, then length
Tantus calls a Silk “the perfect choice for a first dildo” and sells three sizes. Silk Small is 0.8 inches in diameter and 4.25 inches long. Silk Medium is 1.1 inches in diameter and 5.25 inches long (Silk Small; Silk Medium). Tantus lists “length,” not a separate insertable length, so do not assume the whole number goes inside.
Fun Factory sells AMOR as a small dildo that “scores points with sex toy newbies.” The page gives 14.6 cm, a diameter range of Ø 2.3–3.7 cm, and a weight of 181 g (Fun Factory). A range means the shaft is not one width all the way along. Convert before you compare: 2.3 cm is about 0.9 inches and 3.7 cm is about 1.5 inches. AMOR is not the same size as Silk Medium just because both are called small.
If you can, compare the listed diameter with something you already know is comfortable, such as a finger. If a listing gives one number and does not say whether it is the widest point, the tip, or an average, the page has not fully answered.
Firmness is rarely a number
Makers do not share one scale for soft and firm. Read the material words they do use.
AMOR is medical-grade silicone, and Fun Factory calls that toy “supple and flexible” (Fun Factory). The Silks are Tantus’s “100% Ultra-Premium Silicone.” Silk Medium shows a flexible-material icon and does not publish a firmness grade in the text (Tantus). Customer comments on that page call it firm. Those are reviews, not the manufacturer’s spec.
The njoy Pure Wand is the other end. njoy describes a curved stainless-steel instrument for G- or P-spot massage, 8 inches long, with two tapered tips, weighing 1.51 lb (680 g) (njoy). njoy’s materials page says the company uses 316 stainless and specifies a medical-grade material and finish (njoy). Rigid metal does not compress. That is a different first toy from a flexible silicone shaft.
An extra table on the Pure Wand page lists weight as 46 oz and dimensions as 9.5 × 5.1 × 2.6 in (njoy). Those figures do not match the 1.51 lb and 8-inch length in the description. We report both. We do not guess which is the toy and which is the parcel.
Material, then lubricant
LELO’s product FAQ describes its silicone as nonporous and free of BPA, lead, latex, and phthalates, and says it will not harbor bacteria (LELO). Fun Factory lists AMOR as “100% medical grade silicone, non-porous and hypoallergenic” (Fun Factory). Tantus calls the Silks hygienic, hypoallergenic, boilable, and dishwasher safe (Silk Small).
Those cleaning claims belong to Tantus. The AMOR page does not say to boil AMOR or run it through a dishwasher. Follow the manual for the toy you bought. Our cleaning guide explains why one brand’s method should not be copied onto another toy. The materials guide covers silicone, TPE, glass, and metal.
Lubricant has to match. LELO says to avoid silicone-based moisturizers on silicone toys and to use water-based ones (LELO). See how to choose lubricant.
Tantus also says the Silks are “perfectly safe to use as dilators.” That is Tantus’s wording, not a medical recommendation from us. If you are using a toy because of pain, a condition, or recovery, ask a clinician.
Suction cups
A suction base lets you stick a toy to a smooth surface. Fun Factory says AMOR’s base “adheres to smooth, flat surfaces,” mentions suction power, and says the base is very flat and harness-compatible (Fun Factory). Its buying guide says classic dildos in that range have ultra-flat bases that adhere to smooth surfaces, which is why the brand mentions shower use (Fun Factory).
Suction is not a property of silicone in general. The Silk Medium page shows a “not suction cup compatible” icon (Tantus). If hands-free use on a wall or floor matters, look for a suction base in the description. AMOR’s page says smooth and flat. It does not publish a weight limit for the cup.
The base, if anal use is on the table
Fun Factory says its dildos’ wide bases “act as a stopper, making our dildos safe for any kind of anal FUN,” and that “the flared base makes our dildos safe for anal play, as that base prevents the toy from sliding in too far” (Fun Factory). The AMOR page says Fun Factory dildos are for vaginal use and are “also safe for anal play” (Fun Factory).
That is one manufacturer’s statement about its own shapes. The Silk Medium page includes an anal-safe icon, but the page doesn’t describe the base in words. An icon is weaker than a sentence. If anal use is the plan, choose a toy whose maker describes the base in words. If the goal is prostate-specific, see the prostate massager guide.
AMOR’s curved tip is described as aimed at the G-spot or prostate (Fun Factory). The Pure Wand is sold for the same areas, with a rigid curve (njoy). A curve changes the angle. It does not guarantee you will find a particular spot.
Harness use is a separate feature
Silk Medium is listed as harness compatible (Tantus). AMOR is too, and Fun Factory mentions a super-thin base so partners can be closer (Fun Factory). A first solo toy does not need to be harness-ready. A suction cup and a harness are different jobs, even when one toy can do both.
What we are not ranking
We are not calling any of these the best first dildo. Tantus applies “first dildo” to the Silk line, which includes more than one size (Silk Small). Fun Factory applies “newbies” to AMOR’s 14.6 cm length (Fun Factory). A reader who wants very little girth may prefer the published 0.8-inch Silk Small. A reader who wants a suction base may prefer AMOR. A reader who wants rigid pressure may be looking at the Pure Wand instead of a dildo at all.
We do not list prices. The brand pages were showing prices on October 10, 2026, and those numbers move.
If you wanted vibration after all, that is a different guide: how to choose your first vibrator.
A short checklist
- The material is named, not just “body-safe.”
- Diameter is listed, as one number or a range.
- Length is listed. If insertable length is not stated separately, do not invent it.
- Suction is stated if you need it. Do not infer it from a flat base.
- For anal use, the maker explains the base. Fun Factory’s flared-base wording is a clear example (Fun Factory).
- Lubricant matches the material. Water-based is the default LELO gives for silicone (LELO).
- You have that toy’s cleaning instructions, not another brand’s.
FAQ
How big should a first dildo be?
There is no universal size. Among toys whose makers present as beginner-friendly, published diameters here run from 0.8 inches (Tantus Silk Small) to a 2.3–3.7 cm range (Fun Factory AMOR). If you are unsure, pick the smaller published size. Compare diameter before length.
Do I need a soft dildo?
Not always. Fun Factory calls AMOR supple and flexible. The njoy Pure Wand is rigid steel and much heavier. If the product page never mentions firmness, you do not have that information yet.
Are suction-cup dildos better?
Only if you want the toy on a smooth, flat surface. Fun Factory says AMOR’s base does that. Tantus marks Silk Medium as not suction-cup compatible. A suction base is a feature, not a quality score.
Can I use a dildo anally?
Only if the base is meant to stay outside the body. Fun Factory says the flared base on its dildos is what keeps them from sliding in too far. Do not assume every silicone toy has that base. A plug-shaped toy is a different purchase from a shaft with a narrow end.
Can I boil it to clean it?
Tantus says the Silk toys are boilable and dishwasher safe. That instruction is on the Tantus pages, not on the Fun Factory AMOR page. njoy’s steel Pure Wand is a different material again. Use the care steps for the brand you bought, and see the cleaning guide before you improvise.
Is a metal toy a good first dildo?
The Pure Wand is a first toy for some people and a poor match for others. It is heavy, rigid, and curved, and njoy does not market it as a small starter dildo. Read both tip diameters, and note the conflicting weight figures, before you decide.
