Research-based: how we put this guide together. We haven’t used these products. This guide is based on manufacturer pages checked on October 10, 2026, linked inline and again in Sources. It is not a hands-on review. If a page does not state a spec, we leave it out. Prices change, so check the product page before you buy.

A beginner plug is a small toy with a base meant to stay outside the body. This page is about that shape: size, material, and the base words the maker actually uses. It is not a prostate-massager guide. For curved, prostate-specific toys, use prostate massagers for beginners.

Short answer: Start with the smallest size the brand itself calls a beginner size, in a material the page names. Read the base in the product’s own words. “Flared,” “flexible,” and “tapered stem” are not interchangeable. The examples below illustrate those differences. They are not a ranking.

Which size the brand calls small

b-Vibe’s Snug Plug 1 page says “starting small is the golden rule,” describes the plug as finger-sized and 3.4 inches, and says it weighs only 55 grams (b-Vibe). The Beginner Snug Plug Set includes plug 1 (small) plus plugs 2 and 3 (intermediate), and says to start with the smallest (b-Vibe).

Fun Factory calls BOOTIE Small “the perfect first toy for butt play beginners,” and tells new buyers to try BOOTIE S, “with lube, of course” (Fun Factory). That is the brand’s note about its own small size, not a universal inch limit.

The Pure Plug is sized by head width: small 1 inch (25 mm), medium 1.25 inches (32 mm), large 1.5 inches (38 mm) (njoy). njoy does not put a beginner label on the 1-inch head. It is simply the smallest of the three. A 1-inch steel head is not the same object as a 55-gram silicone plug.

Hush 2 comes in four sizes. Lovense says each is 100% silicone, completely waterproof, app-controlled, and wearable (Lovense). Lovense lists the sizes by maximum diameter: 1, 1.5, 1.75, and 2.25 inches. The product is Visit Lovense's official site (paid link, opens in a new tab).

The base, in the words on the page

b-Vibe’s set page says “the flared base — a MUST for anal toys — keeps the plug comfortable during extended wear” (b-Vibe). The Snug Plug 1 page also says flared, spelled there as “flared based,” and later collection copy mentions a wide tapered base (b-Vibe). The “MUST” line is b-Vibe’s own warning. We are quoting it. A toy with no base that stays outside is a different design, and b-Vibe is telling its readers that is not optional.

Fun Factory doesn’t call BOOTIE’s base “flared.” It says the base is flexible, calls it a perfect-fit base, and says the slim, flexible base is comfortable to wear. The page does label the toy ANAL SAFE (Fun Factory). We will not rewrite “flexible” as “flared” to make the products sound alike.

njoy describes a large head and a “tapered stem for easy retention and long-term comfort” (njoy). The page does not say “flared base.” An extra table lists 48 oz and 4.8 × 5.1 × 2.6 in, which read like a parcel, not three plug lengths. Head width is the size fact the description states. Lovense doesn’t describe Hush 2’s base as flared either; check the manual. We do not add one.

Dimensions, including the unlabeled ones

BOOTIE’s sizes are labeled. Small: 7.6 cm, Ø 1.6–2.7 cm, 42 g. Medium: 9.3 cm, Ø 1.7–3.5 cm, 69 g. Large: 11.1 cm, Ø 1.9–4.05 cm, 108 g (Fun Factory). A diameter range means the neck and the bulb differ. Comparing only the first number would understate the widest point.

Snug Plug 1 is less tidy. Prose says 55 grams. A size list on the same page includes 54 g, plus 8.7 cm / 3.4 in, 2.2 cm / 0.9 in, 1 cm / 0.4 in, 3.5 cm / 1.4 in, and 7.04 cm / 2.77 in, without a clear label on each figure (b-Vibe). Bullets do name a thin 1 cm flexible neck. We will not assign the other unlabeled numbers to length or circumference. The 3.4-inch figure is the one the prose ties to the plug. Both weights stay, because they conflict.

Elsewhere, b-Vibe mentions 55 g to 350 g across “five styles,” and 55 g to 1.3 lb across seven sizes (set; Snug Plug 1). Those lines describe the wider collection. The beginner set page still says plugs 1, 2, and 3. njoy doesn’t list Pure Plug length by size.

Material, lubricant, water, and wear-time claims

The Snug plugs are soft, body-safe silicone. The size block also lists silicone, steel, and ABS, which fits a weighted plug (b-Vibe). The set page says silicone lubricant is not compatible and recommends water-based. Bullets include a case and a 1-year warranty. The set warranty is 1 year against defects, and opened non-defective items are not exchangeable (b-Vibe).

BOOTIE is “100% medical grade silicone, non-porous and hypoallergenic.” Cleaning on that page is soap and water, and Fun Factory says you can also boil it, especially if you want to share it (Fun Factory). That boil note belongs to BOOTIE, not to a rechargeable plug. The manufacturer line is Triple A Import GmbH, Am Lenkwerk 3, 33615, Bielefeld, Germany. Fun Factory doesn’t list a BOOTIE warranty length on the product page.

The Pure Plug is stainless steel. njoy’s philosophy page says the company uses 316 material and calls for a medical-grade material and finish (njoy). Steel is rigid. A first plug in steel is a firmness choice, not only a size choice. See body-safe materials and lubricant. njoy doesn’t list an IP rating for the Pure Plug. We do not assign one.

Hush 2 is 100% silicone, USB rechargeable, and listed as IPX7. Lovense sells a water-based lubricant jelly alongside it, lists 7 preset patterns plus unlimited patterns in the app, and offers long-distance and close-range control. The warranty line is 1 year (Lovense). Lovense’s Hush 2 FAQ defines IPX7 as submersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes and says Bluetooth is not stable in or under water (Hush 2 FAQ). Follow the Hush 2 manual. Do not boil it because BOOTIE’s page allows boiling. See the cleaning guide. For the app, see app-controlled toys.

Water wording conflicts on the silicone plugs that are not Hush 2. BOOTIE is labeled waterproof, and Fun Factory says 100% waterproof (Fun Factory). Snug Plug 1’s bullets say completely waterproof, while other Snug copy says splashproof (b-Vibe). The set page uses both “100% waterproof” and splashproof language (b-Vibe). We do not pick the more convenient word. The waterproof guide explains why those words differ.

b-Vibe mentions wearing plugs for hours. Fun Factory uses the heading “A Butt Plug You Can Wear All Day.” njoy says “long-term comfort.” Those are comfort lines, not a session length from us. Stop if it is uncomfortable. Some of this copy also mentions the prostate. That topic stays in the prostate guide linked above.

What we are not ranking

Snug Plug 1 and BOOTIE S are the small silicone options these brands point toward, with different weights, base words, and cleaning lines. Pure Plug small is the narrowest steel head here. Hush 2 is the app option, in four sizes from 1 to 2.25 inches at the widest point. We do not list prices. Check the product page.

A short checklist

  • The brand names a starting size, or you are looking at the smallest listed head.
  • You can tell “flared,” “flexible,” and “tapered stem” apart.
  • Unlabeled numbers, and conflicts such as 54 g versus 55 g, are not smoothed over.
  • Lubricant matches the material, and boil instructions stay on the toy that printed them.

FAQ

What should a beginner look for?

A small size the maker calls a starting size, a named material, and a base described on the page. b-Vibe says to start with the smallest Snug Plug and says a flared base is a must for anal toys. Fun Factory points new buyers to BOOTIE S and describes a flexible base.

Are all butt plugs flared?

No. b-Vibe uses “flared base.” Fun Factory uses “flexible base” for BOOTIE. njoy uses “tapered stem” and does not say flared. Lovense doesn’t describe Hush 2’s base as flared; check the manual. Quote the page you are buying.

How do the sizes compare?

BOOTIE S is 7.6 cm, diameter 1.6–2.7 cm, 42 g. Pure Plug heads are 1 in, 1.25 in, and 1.5 in. Snug Plug 1 is described as 3.4 inches and about 55 g, with a second list at 54 g and several unlabeled figures we are not assigning. Hush 2 comes in 1, 1.5, 1.75, and 2.25 inch maximum diameters.

Can I wear one all day?

Fun Factory and b-Vibe market extended wear in the phrases above. That is their comfort language, not a timed instruction from us. Remove the toy if it hurts.

Which lubricant, and can I boil it?

b-Vibe says water-based lubricant, not silicone lubricant, on the Snug set. Fun Factory says soap and water for BOOTIE, and that you can boil that plug. Do not boil Hush 2 from BOOTIE’s sentence. Hush 2 is rechargeable. The cleaning guide covers the general routine.

Is a plug the same as a prostate massager?

No. Some plugs mention the prostate because of a curve. The prostate-massager guide is the one linked in the introduction. Use this page for a beginner plug’s base and size.
